Visit to Alton Bay Iceport on Lake Winnipesaukee

Visited Lake Winnipesaukee's Alton Bay iceport, on January 30, 2005, in my Cardinal RG. Lots of activity and a good way to spend an afternoon watching airplanes. Iceway 01-19 is plowed approximately 2500 feet with sizeable snowbanks. This can be a significant concern for preventing a propstrike since braking action is nil on the ice.

Approaching Lake Winnipesaukee

Circling a portion of the lake

Final approach to the iceport

Safely grounded (iced?)

Taking in the activity

Skis are welcome too but stay on the snow

Paul King likes your Cardinal, too. It lookis looks you arrived on a busier day that I did. I should have mentioned the words of caution you posted on the CFO post. I am a CFI, and I did get a good local brief before my attempt.

Nice story and pictures. I tried to take Yellowbird to Alton Bay last year, but with only a few hours in type, I found the approach to be a bit beyond my comfort level and we diverted to Laconia instead.

I'd like to try again this year before the ice melts...

Beautiful plane! I'm a beginner student pilot and will be flying in a Cardinal to the annual Sun N Fun Fly-In in Lakeland, FL. Can't wait.
